Sports Club Uniform Guide — What Makes a Great Team Kit

A great sports club kit does more than identify your players on the field. It builds club pride, creates a sense of shared identity and — when done well — looks professional enough to represent your club in any competition. Getting there requires more than picking a colour and ordering online. Here's what Perth and WA club administrators need to know.

Fabric — The Foundation of Performance

The fabric is the most important decision in any sports kit. Get it wrong and the kit looks good in the shop but fails on the field. For WA clubs — where summer temperatures regularly exceed 35°C and outdoor sports are played year-round — fabric performance is non-negotiable.

Moisture-wicking polyester is the standard for most sports — it pulls sweat away from the skin and dries quickly. Not all polyester is equal; weight, weave and treatment all affect performance. A 140gsm fabric suitable for netball isn't the right choice for an AFL playing strip.

Stretch content matters for sports with high movement demands — netball, basketball and gymnastics benefit from fabrics with elastane content that moves with the body without restricting range of motion.

UV protection is increasingly specified for outdoor sports in WA. Fabrics with a UPF 50+ rating protect players from UV exposure during training and match days — particularly important for junior clubs where sun safety is a duty of care obligation.

Wash durability is often overlooked. Sports kits are washed frequently and sometimes roughly. Fabrics that hold their colour, shape and performance wash after wash are worth the slight premium over cheaper alternatives that fade within a season.

Printing Methods — Embroidery vs Sublimation vs Screen Print

The decoration method you choose affects the design possibilities, durability and cost of your kit significantly.

Sublimation printing is the preferred method for most custom sports kits. The ink is permanently bonded to the fabric during production — meaning it won't crack, peel or fade regardless of how many times the garment is washed. Sublimation allows unlimited design complexity — gradients, photographic elements, detailed patterns — because the entire garment is printed, not just a section of it. It's most effective on polyester fabrics.

Embroidery is the right choice for logos and club crests on polo shirts, training tops and formal club wear — not for playing strips. Embroidery adds weight and texture that is inappropriate for performance garments but looks excellent on presentation gear.

Screen printing is best suited to cotton training t-shirts and casual club merchandise. It's cost-effective for simple designs and large runs, but the print sits on top of the fabric rather than being bonded to it — meaning it can crack and fade with repeated washing and high-temperature drying.

Colour Matching — More Important Than It Sounds

Club colours are part of identity. The difference between “navy” and your club's specific shade of navy can be significant — particularly when playing strips, training tops, shorts and socks are sourced across multiple orders or seasons. Subtle colour variation across the kit undermines the professional look you're trying to achieve.

Ask your supplier to provide Pantone colour references for your club colours and use those references consistently across every order. A reputable supplier will match to Pantone specification and maintain those references in their system for future orders.

Be particularly careful when ordering club socks and accessories from different suppliers to your main kit — these are the garments most likely to introduce colour inconsistency.

Sizing — Junior and Senior in the Same Kit

Clubs with both junior and senior players need suppliers who stock a genuine size run from the smallest junior sizes through to large adult sizes — often including tall fits for senior players. This is more complex than it sounds, and many generic sports kit suppliers don't have the full range.

For junior kits specifically: children's sizing varies significantly by age and body type. A 10-year-old playing AFL comes in a very different shape to a 14-year-old. Ensure your supplier offers adequate size variety in junior ranges and can advise on size guides for the sport.

Lead Times — Plan Well Ahead of the Season

Custom sports kits — particularly sublimation-printed playing strips — require significant lead time. From design approval to delivery, allow 8–12 weeks for a first order. Reorders for established designs are typically faster — 4–6 weeks — but still require planning ahead of peak ordering periods.

Perth clubs should factor in shipping time from eastern-states suppliers if relevant. For time-sensitive orders — a finals series, a representative squad, a club anniversary event — working with a supplier who is local to Perth and can manage urgent orders is a genuine advantage.

Budget — What to Spend and Where

For playing strips, prioritise fabric and print quality over everything else. A kit that performs and lasts three seasons is better value than a cheaper kit that needs replacing every season.

For training wear and casual club gear, there is more flexibility on cost — these garments face lower performance demands and families and players typically have more tolerance for variety.

The classic budget mistake is spending too much on design and not enough on fabric. A complex sublimation design on a cheap polyester looks great in the catalogue and disappoints on the field. The reverse — a simple, clean design on a quality performance fabric — always looks more professional in practice.
