How to Make School Uniforms Fit Longer — Smart Buying Tips for Parents

School uniforms are one of the more significant costs of the school year — and kids grow fast. A shirt that fits perfectly in February can look like a crop top by October. With a few smart buying decisions, you can stretch the life of each uniform item significantly and reduce how often you're back at the uniform shop.

Buy One Size Up — But Strategically

The most effective way to get more life from a uniform is to buy a size larger than your child currently needs. This works well for most garments — polo shirts, shorts, trousers and winter jumpers all have enough structure to look reasonable slightly large.

The key is knowing which garments tolerate being oversized and which don't. Polo shirts and shorts: yes. Blazers and formal dresses: no — these need to fit properly to look smart and are harder to adjust if too large.

A good rule: buy shirts and shorts one size up. Buy structured items (blazers, formal skirts, dress trousers) to fit correctly now.

Use the Hem Allowance

Quality school uniform trousers, skirts and dresses are manufactured with a deep hem — typically 3–5 cm — that can be let down as your child grows. Before you buy a new item because it's too short, check the hem. In many cases, a simple alteration adds 6–12 months of extra wear.

Any local tailor or dressmaker can let down a hem for a small fee — usually $10–$20. That's considerably cheaper than a new pair of trousers.

Look for Adjustable Waistbands

Many quality school uniform trousers and skirts feature internal elastic adjustable waistbands — a small button-and-elastic system inside the waistband that allows the fit to be tightened or loosened by several centimetres. These are particularly useful for primary school children whose weight fluctuates alongside their height.

When buying, always check for this feature. If the uniform doesn't have it, a tailor can add elastic to a waistband for a few dollars.

Get the Sizing Right at the Start

Uniform shops — including ours — offer expert sizing and fitting assistance. It's worth taking the time to get a proper fitting rather than guessing from size charts. A garment that fits well when purchased will last longer and look better for longer than one that was always slightly wrong.

Bring your child into the shop at the start of each school year rather than ordering online blindly. Growth spurts can change a child's proportions significantly — not just their overall size.

Rotate Between Two Sets

If the budget allows, buying two complete sets of daily-wear uniforms significantly extends the life of each item. Garments that are washed and worn every day wear out in roughly half the time of garments that are washed every second day. The fabric fibres get more recovery time, the colours fade less quickly and small repairs get caught before they become bigger problems.

When to Replace vs Repair

Not everything needs replacing the moment it looks tired. Small repairs — fixing a popped seam, replacing a button, patching a small hole in a pocket — can extend a garment's life by months. A local tailor or even a basic home sewing kit handles most of these.

Replace when: the fabric is thinning through, the colour has faded significantly compared to a newer item, or the garment is structurally compromised (broken zip, worn-through knees).

Repair when: a seam has come apart, a button is missing, a small hole has appeared at a seam line, or the hem has dropped.

Consider Second-Hand for Growing Years

For primary school children who are growing rapidly, second-hand uniforms are worth considering for basic items — polo shirts, shorts and sports wear. Reserve the budget for buying new blazers, formal items and anything embroidered with your child's name or house colour. Many school P&Cs and uniform shops run second-hand uniform programs.
